So the other day this guy comes into the costume store and asks me for a jester’s mask. He points up at the harlequin mask hanging on the wall. I laughed. “That’s not just a jester, buddy. That’s Harlequin.”

His first reaction seemed to be “whatever.” But he didn’t know what he was getting into. I decided to school him a little bit. “Let’s say you had a choice,” I said. “A jester, which is just a clown with some bells on it, or a devil who’s known for stealing the hearts of women. Which would you say is cooler?”

I had his interest. He asked me what I meant, and I told him the story of Harlequin. Harlequin’s mission on earth was to find the souls of the damned and herd them back to Hell where they belong. But as long as he was on shore leave, he got some ideas of his own. He started looking for food, all the treats he couldn’t get down in Hell. To get food he promised his demonic services to rich men and then ate them out of house and home. Of course, they thought they were getting a good deal, and would use his magic to make women fall in love with them. But Harlequin needs some love of his own, and as often as not he ended up going after their beloved for himself.

Not many people know about Harlequin these days, but if you ask me he’s a much more interesting character than anything Disney or Marvel cook up. I’d like to see more people wearing his mask on Halloween.
